Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if your yoga classes are right for me?
If you are looking for a class where you can work at your own pace, gain strength, increase flexibility, and reduce stress, without feeling the need to "keep up" with the person next to you or look exactly like the instructor, then these classes are right for you!  I understand that no two bodies are exactly alike, so I gently guide students to “feel their way” into poses, doing what complements their body, rather than aiming to look picture perfect.

But, to me, a yoga practice is much bigger than just a physical exercise.  One of the most important things that can be learned through yoga is: body awareness.  Throughout yoga class, I ask students to pay attention to their breath, to the sensations they feel, and to their thoughts.  I ask them to notice if one side is stronger or more flexible than the other.  I ask them to notice if there are certain postures, which they seem resistant to or during which their mind starts to chatter.  We take our time to enter each posture and to explore all of the little micro-movements involved.

Over time, the awareness learned begins to extend beyond class.  What may have started as becoming aware of muscles we didn't know we had will grow into becoming aware of other parts of us that we have forgotten as well.  And in that process of rediscovery, we become more whole.

Who can do yoga?
Anyone can do yoga, but it is important to find an appropriate class; not every class is suitable for every person. If you are reasonably fit and in good health, you are welcome to attend our classes. Previous yoga experience and flexibility are not a requirement! If you have chronic pain, are recovering from a previous injury or illness, or are significantly overweight, I encourage you to discuss your conditions with me prior to registering for class. If you are under a doctor's care for an acute situation, please be sure you discuss taking yoga classes with him or her. Yoga does help many people with chronic pain by helping the body regain its balance between strength and flexibility, movement and awareness. In some cases, private yoga sessions may be more appropriate.

What if I'm running late for yoga class?
Yoga classes are a chance for you and your classmates to focus on yourselves in an atmosphere that is free from distraction. It is important to arrive on time, as being late affects not only your experience, but also the experience of everyone else in the class. Classes begin exactly on time and the door is locked at that time. If you need to change or use the restroom before class, please plan accordingly and arrive early. The door will be open 15 minutes before class. If this is your first class at our studio, please arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete your registration.

What should I wear/bring?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily move and stretch in. Sweatpants or leggings, a t-shirt and light sweater or sweatshirt may be most comfortable. The yoga studio can get cool, so layers are suggested. If you are coming for a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session, please do not wear oily lotions or sunscreens. You do not need to bring anything with you. We have mats, blocks, straps, cushions, blankets, and just about anything else you could possibly want to use during your yoga practice. If you do own a mat, and prefer to use your own, feel free to bring it. You may also want to bring water to class, but most students find that they do not need to.

Is it ok to eat before my yoga class or Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session?
It's best to come on an empty stomach, but if you need something to carry you over, try a light snack such as fruit or yogurt.

Can I drop-in to a yoga class?

Drop-ins are welcome as long as space is available. It is best to email or call first. We keep classes small so that you get more individualized attention.

Where is the studio located in Boalsburg?

We're located just off Highway 322 and Route 45 in Boalsburg. Specific directions will be emailed along with a confirmation when you schedule your first appointment, or come to your first yoga class.

Can I pay for classes on your website?

Currently we only accept online payment for our special events, CDs and gift certificates. Cash and check are accepted at the studio.

Can I start taking classes anytime, or do I need to wait for a new session to begin?
You can begin anytime. Our eight week sessions do have specific start and end dates, so your fee will be prorated according to the number of classes remaining in the session.

What if I have to miss a class?
If you miss a class, please try to make the class up the same week (be sure to call ahead and check space availability). If this is not possible, please make up the class as soon as possible. Classes not made up within the session cannot be honored and no refunds will be given. We can not guarantee that there will be space available in other classes.

What are your cancellation policies?

For private yoga classes and Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy sessions, I require 24 hours notice for cancellation, except for family or health emergencies. I bill in full for missed appointments, or for less the 24 hours notice. For special events, since space is limited, I require 7 days notice for cancellation. If cancellation is more than 7 days prior to the event, a refund equal to one half the registration price will be given. No refunds will be given if cancellation is less than 7 days prior to the event. In the rare case that I need to cancel a class, session, or event, your money will be refunded in full.
